Jayaprakash Birth Centenary Celebration Committee, West Bengal, was formed in a meeting of JP admirers in West Bengal on 11th Oct. 2001. It was resolved in the meeting that the Committee, besides organising meetings and seminars on JP's life and teachings in different parts of the State, would publish books, pamphlets, etc., on JP. It was also decided that attempts should be made to publish one centenary volume comprising articles in three languages, viz. Bengali, Hindi and English. Subsequently we found it convenient to bring out two separate volumes in English and Bengali. We are glad that our attempts have been fruitful and we are now publishing the English and Bengali volumes. Besides, small books and pamphlets have also been published. We could also arrange meetings and seminars in a majority of West Bengal districts. Under the auspices of the West Midnapur District Committee, a month-long Jana Jatra (People's March) was organised covering all the districts of South Bengal.

We spared no pains to collect articles from JP's compatriots in Socialist and Sarvodaya movements as also from the participants of the movement for Total Revolution. Most of them responded to our request and their articles are being incorporated in this volume. We are reproducing here some of JP's writings and also publishing some articles written by JP's close associates like Yusuf Meherally. Minoo Masani, N.G. Goray, S.M. Joshi. Articles from Dada Dharmadhikari and Radhakrishna, who were very close to JP in his Sarvodaya days, are also being published in this volume.

Yusuf Maherally's article written in 1944 reveals what expectations they had from JP while Minoo Masani's and Goray's articles are manifestations of their observation: from a very close quarter combined with admiration and criticism of JP. Articles of Prem Bhasin and Madhu Dandavate who were followers of JP since the Congress Socialist Party days, would reveal some facts which are unknown to many. The articles of HV Kamath and Samar Guha, the two distinguished followers of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who became JP's close associates during PSP and Total Revolution Movement days would help to understand JP from another standpoint. The assertions of Surendra Mohan are very significant to understand JP's role during the emergency period Prof. Sugata Das Gupta had a very affectionate relationship with JP His article is a combination of his hindsight and far sight of JP's vision. The articles of Prof. Bimala Prasad, Prof. Ramjee Singh and Brahmanand, who do not require any introduction, would be helpful to students and researchers on JP. Shiv Nath Prasad, the brother-in-law of JP, has revealed in his article some significant and unknown facts in regard to JP's treatment while he was in Chandigarh Jail during the emergency period. We are grateful to Dr. Nitish Dasgupta, Dr. Tapan Chattopadhayay and Dr. Rabindranath Bhattacharyya for responding to our request. We are sure that their articles would throw some light on JP's work and mission.
