About The Book
"The present volume brings together sixteen research paper which were contributed to 17 I.R.E.D. National seminar on Integrated Land and water mangement for food security in India organized by Department of Geography Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University Gorakhpur on February 8 9.2009. The initiative taken by the editor of this volume for inviting papers from a group of Geographers and researchers of other diciplines having interest on problem of land and water management as well as challenges of food security and to bring them together for duscussions on this theme fills an important gap in the field of Indian studies on integrated land and water management. In my survey of studies on land use and water management researches are in plenty but studies on integrated land and water management are rare. It is noticeable that with growing problem of water resource there is challenge to planners and policy makers to introduce cropping pattern according to availability of water resource. The present volume is a significant attempt to fullfil the present gap in geographical studies. We hope that this volume will stimulate many geograhphers as well as young reseachers to contribute studies on planning for integrated land and water management as well as food security which fill up adequately the serious gaps and difficiencies in the studies by agricultural scientists and Geographers.

Preface
The world's thirst for water is likely to become the most pressing resouce issues for the 21st century. Global water consumption rose ten fold between 1900 and 2008 more than double the rate of population growth and continues to grow rapidly as agricultural, or industrial and domestic demands increase. Globally water supplies are abundant but there are unevenly distributed among and within countries. In some areas water withdrawals are so high relative to supply, that surface water supplies are literally shrinking and ground water reserves are being depleted faster than they can be replenished by rainfall. This situation has already caused serious water shortages to develop in some areas and damagic aquatic ecosystem. It is worth remembering that Eastern U.P. often faces acute drought situations which retard the productivity and income coverage is a must not only for insulating the agriculture against drought but for introducing the much needed diversification in agricultural system to make it commercially more productive in order to get national food security.
