With a view to meeting the demand in the international market for Indian Astrology, Rohini Devi has written this book with the assistance of Pt. Manharbhai Desai.
It gives me great pleasure to write a few words by way of “Foreword” to Smt. Rohini Devi Jadeja’s book “An Insight into Astrology” at the instance of my good friend Sri S. Ramakrishnan. Jyotisha is integrated into Indian culture so closely that the majority of Indians make use of the science in the various activities of their lives, viz., education, occupation, marriage etc. Astrology has definite rules of interpretation which when understood properly can be of great significance in the lives of individuals and nations. The author Smt. Rohini Devi Jadeja has spared no pains to make available all the information needed to enable one to get a good grasp of the subject.
Successful prediction rests not only on a good knowledge of the subject but also on experience and intuitional perception which can be developed with the aid of methods recommended in the Sastras. The chapter dealing with Destiny Vs. Free Will gives a clear idea of the various categories of Karma — Sanchita, Prarabdha and Agami and the relative significance of Sanchita and Prarabdha in indicating future events. The author rightly observes that Sanchita can be partly influenced by human effort, before it transforms itself into Prarabdha. The author is to be congratulated on making available, in a simple language, important astrological principles needed to give one a good grounding in astrology. I wish her all success. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is to be thanked for bringing out such a useful publication for the benefit of the educated public.
According to Hindu custom, a Jan ma Kzindli i.e. Horoscope or life chart, has to be drawn up for every new born — specially for rulers and rich business houses. Kutch Rulers had their own Jyotishis (Astrologers) who drew artistic and beautiful Janma Kundlis (Horoscopes) for their masters. One such horoscope is that of Rao Pragmulji II, made in 1839 A.D. It is 127 ft. long, and believed to be the longest in the world. Done in the “Kaman Gin” style of paintings, this particular horoscope is well preserved in the Ama Mahal Museum of Kutch, India. Rao Pragmuiji II was a very short lived Ruler of Kutch, though he was very powerful and noble. His foresight, encouraged and established modern education within the State, liberal scholarships were given to scholars and artists alike, thus making way for a new era in Kutch in the realm of fine arts. We are very proud to have in the family such great ancestors, who were also noble Rulers. I am grateful to the Trustees of the Ama Mahal Museum Trust for giving me unfettered access to the priceless treasures within the Trust premises. The beautiful paintings which adorn this book have been photographed by Shri Pomul. I am grateful to Prince Maharaj Kumar Hanvantsinhji of Kutch (Chairman), Shri Naranji Jadeja (Trustee) and Mr. Pramod Jethi (Curator) Ama Mahal Trust, for their assistance in bringing out the book. I also thank Kumari Madhuri Jhala of Wadhwan for giving me support and help to make this book possible. Dr. Pandit, Jyotish Vachaspati-Jyotirvid, Jyotishacharya Shri Manhar C. Desai has very kindly given me the permission to take Dasha chapters with modifications and corrections as per my requirements for which I am thankful to him. I am grateful to Dr. Manish Shrikant who introduced me to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. I must thank Shri S Ramakrishnan, Executive Secretary and Director General of the Bhavan, for the readiness with which he agreed to publish this book. I am also thankful to Mahamahopadhyaya Prof. J.H. Dave, Hon. Director of the Bhavan and Shri Lal Shastri, Principal of Bhavan’s Jyotish Bharati, for their valuable guidance. And lastly, I would like to convey my grateful thanks to Dr. B.V. Raman for his scintillating Foreword. My humble prayer to almighty God for giving me inspiration in writing this book.
