Dr. P.V. Parabrahma Sastry (b. 1921), is a well-known figure in the field of epigraphical studies in contemporary Andhra. Endowed with sound scholarship in Sanskrit and Vedic lore, he attained a place of eminence in historical research. He served the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad as Deputy Director, with distinction. He has deciphered and edited large number of inscriptions and published them in various journals of repute. His major works include The Kakatiyas and Their Times and District Volumes of Inscriptions Cuddapah, Karimnagar and Nalgonda Vol. II. He also edited the journal Epigraphia Andhrica, Vol. IV and the revised version of Telugu encyclopaedia Vijnana-Sarvasvamu Vols. I and II. He is also an acknowledged numismatist and his work Satavahana Epoch serves as an eye opener in regard to the origin, original home-land and genealogy of the early Satavahanas. He has been honoured with the Copper-plate Charter and citation by the Epigraphical Society of India in 1986 in recognition of his services to the field of Epigraphy. The Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad, honoured him with Visishta-Puraskaramu.

I am happy to present to the world of scholars this volume of Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers which is the fourth in the Series of that name. It contains the Inscriptions in Telugu language. As I have stated in my Forewords to some earlier Volumes, some years ago the Indian Council of Historical Research launched upon an ambitious programme to compile and publish volumes of Inscriptions pertaining to different periods and regions, with appropriate annotations. I am glad that the programme has made steady progress and has brought out the following volumes which have enriched the epigraphical literature and which have been able to provide ample material for researchers in Indian history and culture. These volumes are: Inscriptions of the Western Gangas (Ed. KV Ramesh 1984). Inscriptions of the Maukharis, Later Guptar, Puspabhutis and Yasovarman Kanau (Ed. K.K. Thapliyal 1984). Inscriptions of the Suryavamsi Gajapatis of Orissa (Ed. R. Subramanyam 1986). Inscriptions of the Pallavas (Ed TV. Mahalingam 1988), Inscriptions of the Sarabhapuriyas, Panchevamsis and Somavamsis (Ed. Ajay Mitra Shastri 1995), Inscriptions of the Early Kadambas (Ed. GS. Gai 1996), Inscriptions of Orissa-2 Vils (Ed. Snigdha Tripathy 1997. 1999), Inscriptions of Haryana Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Kashmir and Adjoining Hilly Tracts (Ed. JN. Agrawal 1999), Inscriptions of the early Pandyas (Ed. KG. Krishnan 2002), CD RoM of Epigraphia Carnatica (Ed. B.L.. Rice- CD prepared by ICHR Southern Regional Centre, Bangalore).

Since the number of Inscriptions pertaining to the history of Vijayanagara is very large, it was decided to start under the above programme a separate project to compile in separate volumes, available inscriptions in Kannada, Telugu, Sanskrit and Tamil languages. Under this project three volumes containing as many as 1893 inscriptions in Kannada language have been published in 2004-09 These have been edited by Shrinivas Ritti and B.R. Gopal. The present one is a volume of Telugu inscriptions. Volumes containing Sanskrit and Tamil inscriptions are under preparation and they will be brought out shortly. I congratulate Dr. Shrinivas Ritti, Convener of the Vijayanagara Inscriptions Project who is instrumental in successfully bringing out these volumes in quick succession. The present volume has been ably edited by Dr PV Parabrahma Sastry, former Deputy Director (Epigraphy), Department of Archaeology & Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh. 1 heartily congratulate this senior scholar for this achievement.

The present volume of the Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers is the fourth in the series of volumes planned under the Vijayanagara Inscriptions Project by the Indian Council of Historical Research With this volume the project is half way through. Two more volumes, one, of Sanskrit Inscriptions and another of Tamil Inscriptions which are being edited by scholars, are expected to be published early next year With those two volumes the project undertaken by the ICHR will be complete I am beholden to the authorities of the ICH for having entrusted me with the project. I am thankful to the present Chairman of the ICHR Professor Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, who has evinced keen interest in the progress of the project and has offered full support in pursuing it I am also thankful to De Ishrat Alam Member Secretary of the Council for his kind cooperation in the speedy preparation and publication of these volumes. Dr 1 K Pandeya, Coordinator, who has been associated with the project ever since its inception, has extended his full support and help in pursuing this project I remain grateful to him for the kind courtesy shown to me through the years while working on this project I express my heartfelt thanks to my young friend Dr. S.K Aruni, Deputy Director of the Southern Centre of the Council, whose initiative and involvement in the project have enabled the speedy publication of these volumes.

This volume has been edited by my senior friend Dr. 1 V Parabrahma Sastri, a well-known epigraphist and a Sanskrit scholar We have been working together in the field of epigraphy and history for the last several decades, I am thankful to him for kindly conceding to my request for undertaking this work and ably accomplishing it, in spite of his preoccupations and advancing age.
