Introduction

Indian women are considered among the most beautiful in the world, as confirmed when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won Miss World in 1994 [Fig. 1]. In the West people are familiar with this particular type of Indian beauty. Traveling around India, however, you can observe a great diversity of female beauty - lighter skin in the north, and darker skin further south. However, what they have in common is their irresistible charm, emphasised by makeup, clothes and decorations. This book primarily presents traditional Indian cosmetology against a broad cultural background. This issue is both extensive and complex. India is a civilisation that has continued uninterrupted since ancient times. It is an extremely diverse culture, and at the same time very coherent in its framework. Despite many foreign invasions, such as Muslim and European, it was able to assimilate and, as it were, absorb them, enriching itself with new values without losing its own. All this makes India a fascinating mixture of traditions and customs with very different origins. Some cultural habits that are still continued today have their origins in the ancient past. dating back thousands of years. Therefore, attempting to describe and explore Indian cosmetology carries its fair share of risk. It is worth mentioning that three main traditional health systems are practiced in India: Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha, which further complicates this challenge. In an era of return to natural forms of health care, it seems appropriate to present the traditional cosmetology of this extremely rich culture. Interestingly, many women continue old traditions to this day and they are part of everyday life. Learning. even to a small extent, the beauty methods of these some of the most beautiful women in the world can also be very useful for others from different cultural backgrounds.
