About the Author

A keen researcher and prolific writer Dr. H.H.A. Bourai has filled many important posts. He taught Teacher Education Courses and Administration of Education and served as Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. He also served as Professor of Philosophy of Education, and Principal, Post-Graduate Teachers' Training College. Sardarshahr (Rajasthan). Lately. he was Vice-Chancellor, HNB Garhwal Uni versity, Srinagar (Pauri-Garhwal). Dr. Bourai edited a research Journal Avaghan, published by Gandhi Vidya Mandir, for several years and guided fundamental and functional research at M.Ed and Doctorate level.

'Indian Theory of Education is the first of its kind to discover the essentials of educational thought from a wide variety of sources and to co-ordinate them in to the foundation framework for a systematic theory of education. This book has been addressed to Teachers, Professors and to all those who bear a love of learning of India's rich culture and civilization. The book will prove of immense value to B.Ed./M.Ed/Ph.D scholars, Educational planners and Educational Administrators. This work has been divided into ten chapters along with an Appendix Historical Background' of the Indian Theory of Education. First Theistic Philosophy of Education, deliberates on Vedanta, Upanishada and Nyaya. If Vedanta reveals the aims of education, methods of teaching, nature of curriculum and the mechanism of knowledge, then the Upanishads (which constitute the basic springs of Indian thought) enlighten the concept of good life, the curriculum, teacher-pupil-relationship, concept of discipline and method of teaching 'Nyaya', stands for logical thinking and inculcates rigorous criticism in the students. Second is a critical study of the Gita, enabling us to appreciate the theory of Mind and Wisdom, Personality Integration and Individual Differences. Third is an application of Indian theories of education: aims of education, fundamentals of education, Teachers and types, the students, the curriculum and the methods of teaching Fourth an 'Agnostic Philosophy and it interprets Buddhism, Jain and Sankhya. Though agnostic in nature, yet their rich contribution did build up secular and scientific theories of education. Buddhism, did identify: aims of education, Teachers and Types, Role of students, Methods of teaching and curriculum. If the Jains delve upon the theory of Judgement; The Sankhya resorts to theory of knowledge. Fifth highlights the educational contribution of Swami Dayanand which emerged in the form of Gurukula system of education. Tagore's philosophy did blossom forth in the form of Shantiniketan, a University of international repute. Sixth is on Gandhian education. Salient features being Craft as a centre of Self supporting aspect, non violence, to raise man to a new man and education of 3H (Head/heart/hands).
