The book highlights the nature and features of Indian society and the changes that have taken place in various social institutions during different historical phases.

This is comprehensive book and covers subjects widely prescribed in the syllabi of various Indian Universities at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Sociology. The topics covered include Indian Society, Indian Society and Culture, Indian Society and Social Institutions, Social Change in India and Indian Social Institutions, and Contemporary Indian Society and Culture.

While the subject has been presented in an analytical style with central, side and running headings, integral and holistic view has been adopted in matters having different opinions. The language is easy and free of technical jargon as far as possible. At the end of each chapter, questions of University examinations have been given to help the students for preparing well for the examination. This ideal textbook will prove most useful to the students and teachers of Sociology as well as policymakers and common readers.

Rajendra Kumar Sharma is M.A., M-Phil., Ph.D, U.G.C. Research Fellow, Punjab University, Chandigarh (1985-1988), and has worked on I.C.S.S.R. Sponsored Project (1987)óíOverseas Indian Entrepreneurs in Kenyaí He is LMI: Indian Sociological Society, Uttar Pradesh Samaj Shastra Parishad, Indian Research Association, U.P. Darshan Parishad. He is author of dozens of papers and books on Sociology both in Hindi and English. Dr. Sharma has utilised his experience of teaching Sociology to postgraduate and undergraduate students for writing ideal textbooks on almost all the papers taught in this subject at the Indian Universities. He taught at N.A.S. PG. College, Meerut (1987-1991). At present he is Lecturer at N.R.E.C. (P.G.) College, Ch. Charan Singh University.

Starting with characteristics of Indian Society, the book deals with Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Rural, Tribal and Urban social systems and institutions. It describes major Religious Groups in India. After summarization of social changes in India it discusses various trends in contemporary social changes such as Industrialization, Urbanization, Labour Problems, Secularization, Tradition and Modernity, Sanskritization, Westernization, Modernization, Politicization and Democratisation. In the end, it points out need and methods of realisation of national and emotional integration in India.

Thus, the author has tried to solve the student's problems of what, how and why about the subject. However, suggestions for improvement are most cordially invited for further improvement.
