This book deals with an advanced study of India's political system in historical and contemporary perspectives. The present political system, as devised by our founding fathers, stands on the foundations laid by the great national leaders during the course of freedom movement as well as on the statutory arrangements made by the British rulers to somehow maintain their imperial hold over this vast country. The operation of this political system has witnessed supplementation with political developments occurred after the inauguration of the Constitution in 1950. Hence, a number of new topics have been included in the present edition in view of the fact that they have their definite impact on the operation of our political system.
J.C. Johari has been associated with teaching of Political Science for more than forty years in premier college affiliated to Agra and Delhi Universities. For a year (1971- 72) he worked as Deputy Director at the Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies, New Delhi, he has written a number of books on various courses of Political Science and his articles have appeared in a number of research journals in India and abroad.
The first edition of this book was well received at the hands of its readers. Keeping in view the suggestions and comments of a good number of my friends, I have thoroughly revised and enlarged it. Some chapters have been added to discuss constitutional development and freedom movement so as to enable the readers to acquaint themselves with the course of the development of India's political system. Besides, chapters on Federal System and Parliament have been suitably enlarged and updated so that the readers may have a thorough understanding of the operation of our political system. The role of Judiciary and Election Commission has been reinterpreted in the light of latest developments. The themes of political corruption, political criminalisation and electronic governance and information technology have been included so as to cover the hitherto untouched issues of Indian politics. Adequate attention has been paid to the study of other significant issues of Indian politics like casteism, communalism and regionalism.
I hope that this book in the form of a detailed study of Indian polity shall meet the requirements of the students offering this course for the university or competitive examinations and thereby my labours shall be suitably rewarded.
