Mythology being an immensely comprehensive and abstruse topic in general, and Indian mythology in practical, it's never an easy task putting together a book that seek to outline heroic sags and religious legends of the vast Indian subcontinent. Indian mythology and religion are closely interwoven, and any attempt to make any generalisation can only oversimplify. With a mind boggling number of legends, heroes, deeds and tales, Indian mythology is a virtual treasure-trove.

The present book provide a comprehensive study on Indian mythology. Students of mythology and religious studies will be highly benefited by this well-prepared book.

Ranadip Mukhopadhyay (b.1930) is a retired professor with lifelong interest in Indian mythology. He has taught at a number of universities including one in Australia where he spent a few years. He has made great contributions to vedic and classical Sanskrit scholarship. He has also published a number of articles on various subjects including Indian history. vedic philosophy and literature in Indian and foreign journals.

Associated with academic bodies, religious institutions and charity organisations in various capacities, he is known for his ingenious writing on Indian religions, culture and literature. He currently lives in Massachusetts, where he also runs a Yoga and Meditation Centre.

Despite historic allusions in common usage, the term 'myth' does not necessarily imply that an anecdote or a narrative is a figment of imagination. All religions and mythological reservoirs contain legends believed to be the gospel truth by some, and as allegorical, philosophical or merely imaginative insights by others. By not taking a stand on this issue, the book refrains from engaging itself in a scholarly tussle, and merely brings to light a mythological gold mine under a single roof.
