Indra has a special place among the gods. In the Vedas, Indra is the most important god. Later, in the Purans, the godheads of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar get more importance. Indra was known as Devraj or the king of gods. He was a great warrior and fought with many demons such as Vritra, Kalakey, Nivata-kavacha. But, every time a serious problem threatened heaven, he resorted to the three godheads.
It is believed that when Indra battles with the demons, people on the earth experience thunder and lighting, and rain and storm. In some sense, Indra is also the god of rain. Indra's wife and queen was Indrani, also called Shachi. Indra and Shachi had a son named Jayant. But his more famous son is Arjun, one of the Pandav brothers.
