About the Book:

The present work deals with the history of Indian music beginning from the Indus Valley Civilization. It sheds light on the music of the Vedic and Epic ages as well as that found in the Buddhist and Jain sources, Tamil sources, Natyasastra, Pauranic sources etc. It imparts information on the forms of musical instruments prevalent during those times. The work also tries to ascertain whether Indian music was subjected to foreign influences or not.

The book contains detailed information about the authors, composes and musicians of the 9th to 20th centuries, both Hindustani and Carnatic which will undoubtedly, prove to be of immense interest and value to the researchers and students of Indian music.

The work will be of interest and benefit to both the student-scholar and layman.

About the Authors:

He was an eminent scholar of literature, philosophy and music. After doing his M.A. in Philosophy, English literature and Sanskrit he became a lecturer of Philosophy and English in the D. A. V. College, Kanpur. In 1945 he was appointed Principal of Yuvarajadutta College, Lakhimpur- Khiri. Deeply interested in music, he had the good fortuneof listening to masters like Pt. Visnudigambara Paluskara Binakara Murad Ali and Ustad Alauddin Khan, Badi Moti Bai and Gauhar Jaan. During this period he became closely associated with Pt. V. N. Bhatkhande. Suddenly due to a severe illness, he lost his capacity to sing as a result of which he had to give up singing but continued teaching. In 1956 Dr. B. V. Keskar heard his lecture on music in Delhi. Highly impressed he appointed Dr. Sing left All India Radio in 1962 and settled down in Varanasi. Became the Chairman of ht eUttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak academi in 1973. In 1974, the Indian government conferred upon him the Padambhushan . he ws awarded the honorary D. Litt. Degree by the Banaras Hindu University and Honours like the Sangeet Vacaspati of the government of Madhya Pradesh, Saraswati Samman of the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan. The President of India awarded him for his special contribution to the study of Sanskrit language.

He also wrote many books important among which are Kabira Vanmaya in three volumes and English Translation of Pratyabhijnahrdayam, Vijnanabhai.
