Information Storage and Retrieval are major challenges that the world is facing today irrespective of the language in which the information is stored. The Central Institute of Indian Languages and its Regional Language Centres are functioning for more than four decades as repositories of Information on Indian Languages, Literature and Allied disciplines. Our traditional Libraries have become digital Libraries in the past 5 years using the modern technology and our integrated library system is most advanced and ranked second in the country. The main objective of the library is to act as the National Information Centre on linguistics and Indian languages. Along with the growth of our libraries, the staff of the Library too have contributed a lot for both Linguistics and Information Science.

The present volume by Dr.B.A. Sharada the Librarian of the institute whose contributions have earned laurels from several senior scholars including the legendary Prof. Ashok R. Kelkar, consolidates the research output in a way of the institute in the area of Library and Information Science including Indian languages and Linguistics. The papers are classified under three broad headings namely 1.Bibliometrics, Informetrics and Citation Indexing; 2. Indexing Language, Infolinguistics and NLP Applications; 3. Digital Library and others. In the first chapter, if Citation analysis reveal the amount of usage of the existing documents in the research out put in linguistics, citation indexing shows up to what extent the published documents have been utilized by the research community. The study on Indexing Language which is a system for naming the subjects have been done giving importance to Indian languages. The concept Infolinguistics is the combination of Information Science and Linguistics. Here Linguistics is used as a representation mechanism for the information contained in a document. Though Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a developing field the studies in this present collection show how best it could be developed in Indexing language with special reference to Indian languages. The articles on digital library also give importance to multilingual libraries and discuss issues related to Indian languages. All the papers have a great reference value for both Linguists and Information Scientists.

The Institute is pleased to bring out in a consolidated volume the research output of the Library of this Institute headed by an able Librarian, Dr.B. A. Sharada who has striven hard to keep herself fully involved with her academic world.
