He established the Underwater Archaeology Wing in the Archaeological Survey of India and conducted path breaking underwater archaeological excavations in Indian Ocean - off Dwarka, Mahabalipuram, Bangaram Island, and Elephanta. Widely travelled in several countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, he is a renowned authority in Asia-Pacific region on underwater archaeology. Author and editor of 14 monographs and over 80 research papers he is the only social-scientist, listed among the ten brightest young scientists in the country.
