Foreword

I am delighted to pen a forward for a very comprehensive and subject oriented book on the Topic of Rog Nidana depicted by my beloved friend Vd Swagat N MD in Ayurveda.
I went to think of our friendship then it dragged me decades back when i use to visit Udupi Ayurveda college in those days my practice was entirely concentrated on Nadipareeksha development and associated Cardiac ailments.
My junior friend Swagat was working in Kayachikitsa was very keen to utilize my expertise in Cardiac diseases at his department. I saw in him a young energetic and positive minded budding Vaidya. He interacted with me many aspects of the ayurveda protocols for Cardiac diseases. Even at that time his homework done had astonished me and was noticeable in his few presentations i have come across like Hypertension, Osteoarthritis Angina...to name a few.
Next he was keen to imbibe my family tradition of Nadipariksha. He successfully imbibed it from me and has mastered the art of nadipariksha.
His academic, public speaking, thought clarity and daring to implement newer modalities has always impressed me I remember that i had recommended his name on several platforms to express his above capabilities.
Since last one decade he has been completely dedicated in Teaching and practice and writing some authentic and innovatively inspiring in the field of Rog Nidana.
In fact Rognidan as a subject may have been described as it is required for the student but i must admit that the actual Nidan of the Roga is the rarest of the rare event in a Vaidya's practice. More than 80% of the patients approaching for Ayurvedic treatments have their Nidana ready in their medical files. The only possible Nidan for a Vaidya remains as Fat File Syndrome..!(FFS).
Real spirit of Chikitsa lies in Nidan only (रोगमादौ परीक्षेत् तदनंतरमौषधम्). The real परीक्षा remain scarce in this era. If nor दशविध at least अष्टविध needs to be explored during undergraduate studies. If this is executed than the student will feel something innovative of Ayurveda instead of ready-made diagnosis of modern technologies. The fake internet information adds to the above misery.
So it is the need of the hour that the colleges encourage the Nidan part of Ayurveda.
This small piece of his creation is the fine outcome of his curriculum, efforts for the proud buddying Vaidys of third year graduation curriculum.
Not only hoped but strongly recommend that such efforts must be appreciated by one and all.
With best wishes for more such creations

Preface

For the student of any stream of medical science, the discipline of Roganidana forms a vital bridge between initial learning phase of preclinical sciences and the final phase of clinical subjects. The role and significance of learning of pathology in clinical medicine is quite well summed up by Sir William Osler (1919-1849), acclaimed physician and teacher in medicine considered as "Father of Modern Medicine, by his famous quote "your practice of medicine will be as good as is your understanding of pathology"
Roga Nidana is the prime subject that reveals the complete process of disease in the given patient and then to medicine. So after careful examination and analysis of roga and rog avinischaya is done. It is valuable to students early in their medical school years by highlighting the clinical relevance of their basic science courses, and in preparation for their PG examinations. The book is also helpful to students, Practitioners (both general and specialists who provide care) will find it beneficial as a reference text, designed to update their knowledge of the mechanisms underlying pathology of diseases.
Diseases are as old as life, Disease is very old nothing has changed it is we who changed Now we learned to recognize what was earlier indiscernible. The science which describes roga by means of Nidana, Purvarupa, Roopa, Samprapthi, Upashaya, Anupashaya and Sadhya Asadhyata called Roganidana and Vikriti Vijnana We need to know every aspects and nature of disease before treatment and also for prevention of disease. Before starting a treatment, disease has to be examined so that appropriate treatment can be given. A treatment can be successful only if diagnosis is right. Helpful in planning treatment by knowing Nidana Purvaroopa, Roopa, Samprapthi, Upashaya, Anupashaya and Sadhya Asadhyata.
The selection of drug procedure, dosage, duration etc are all planed after knowing everything about disease. Diseases will not manifest without doshas, dosha vitiation produce symptoms of disease, so complete knowledge of Roganidana is esssential for right diagnosis. A physician should know to examine any disease by its features and plan treatment on the basis of sandya sadhyata (Prognosis) Treatment explained in our classical text are to correct doshavaishamya, so we need to understand the doshavaishamya for correcting it.
