About the Author Dr. Vasant Gowariker did his master's and obtained his doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, England. He worked for 5 years with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Summerfield Research Station, Kidderminister as Senior Technical Officer.

Prelude This is a third incarnation of the "Science, Population and Development" book that I edited six years ago. The latter was a companion volume to my Presidential Address to the Indian Science Congress. Along with two reprints brought out by the National Book Trust, the present publication constitutes the sixth re-worked edition of my work on India's population.

Introduction I have said it before and would say it again. Before formulating my view, I spent several months listening to academicians, intellectuals and experts who had something to say about India's population. Their number is well beyond 100, out of whom I have chosen around 75 persons for reference in Chapters 1.2 and 1.3 because they stimulated an unprecedented thought process in my mind, prompting me to write Chapter 1.4. These three chapters together constitute Part 1. All this led to the "I Predict" theme in Part 2 which reflects my final reaction, as far as this book goes, to India's population scenario.
