Kath-khuni literally means wood and stone. It is a typical dwelling of the mountainous region of the lower himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. The name hails from a place where these materials are available in abundance. Kath- khuni houses are usually 2 storey high. The lower floor is for the cattle and the upper for the living room and the kitchen. The construction technique is very unique where the foundation walls are made by interlocking stone and timber to give it a strong base to protect them from frequent earthquakes. As the building progresses, the material is switched to wood which is light weight. This kit will help in understanding the basis of vernacular architecture and also give an exposure to our rich traditional culture prevalent in the rural areas, in a way which is fun and interactive. The template inside has to be cut, colored, folded and then joined to make a hut. Follow instruction for cutting and folding given on the cover flap.
