Book Description
Preface
In the context of area studies assuming importance on the International scene, the need for a fairly comprehensive History of Telugu Literature in English for the International reader has been felt for quite some time. The monographs, hand books available (in English) are, expectedly, inadequate for a serious reader. They barely provide an outline or general survey of the subject. It is with the intention of meeting the need of providing detailed information that the Institute of Asian Studies, Madras, has planned for a History of Telugu Literature in five volumes. History of Madras, Social and Economic History of Madras, the Evolution of Telugu Language are the natural components that have shaped the History of Telugu Literature. These have been covered in the first volume.

This volume, the second in the series, deals with the Age of Sivakavis and the Age of Tikkana and covers some thirty seven Telugu poets, apart from a host of anonymous inscriptional poets and a few of Telugus who wrote in Sanskrit. Some who flourished before 1400 A.D. but whose periods are very uncertain are also included at the end of the volume.

One point I wish to state is that I have given generally the year around which each poet flourished. I have desisted from giving the beginning and ending dates for any poet for the simple reason that there is no reliable data regarding either the birth or the demise of any poet. Any attempt to give the span of life of a poet remains only. a matter of conjecture and nothing more.

I have tried to put them in a chronological order as far as possible but for the broad grouping adopted under the two different ages. It is hoped the volume will be found useful to the interested reader.

I thank all the writers whose works I have perused in the course of preparation of this volume.

My thanks are due to the authorities of the Institute of Asian Studies, Madras-96, for issuing this volume under the series.
