The extensive and intensive study of Regional History has been a significant trend in the historical research in the recent time. In the nineteenth century there were a few sporadic attempts to throw light on the history and culture of Orissa. Most of these suffered from the lack of objectivity. It was during the last three decades that serious efforts have been made to study the different aspects of the History of Orissa in a detailed and dispassionate manner. My works, namely, Orissa under the British Crown: 1855-1905, History of Education in Orissa: 1905-1936, Administrative History of Orissa: 1866-1912, Princely States of Orissa: 1905-1947 which are the products of several years of painstaking research constitute a significant contribution not only to historical scholarship but also to the new trends at work in historical writings.

The materials contained in these works form the basis of this book, History of Modern Orissa. It is a cogent, compact and analytical study of the history of modern Orissa in its varied aspects. But for this work there is no research-based work on the Modern History of Orissa. The work is of importance, as representing a pioneering attempt to present an authentic and readable account of the History of Modern Orissa with the mini- mum of scholarly display.

It is to be admitted that there is scarcity of text books on the History of Modern Orissa. The existing text books are not sufficiently useful to the students at B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. levels. It has been found essential to write a book which is balanced, comprehensive and interesting. This publication will contribute to the corrective forces at work and render the study of the History of Modern Orissa fascinating to the students concerned. It is the hope of the author that the book will provide a starting point for further inquiry and a stimulus to thought.
