In the course of my study on the historical mahakavyas from the eleventh to fifteenth century, I have tried to be as comprehensive as possible. Firstly I have given a brief note about the author, his background, his date and other works, then given the story canto-wise and a critical appreciation which in-cludes a study of the poetry and the language of the work. Then I have discussed the historical, social, cultural, religious, political and geographical data as available in the work. As a finale, I have appended a list of names of flora and fauna as found in the text. This is the pattern I have followed throughout. In social, cultural and geographical aspects, there is very little difference in the works studied, all of which follow almost a set pattern. There may appear a repetition here and there under this head but then it could not be avoided for I did not feel like breaking up the symmetry. The historical data of each work I have tried to compare with the data available from the inscrip-tions and other chronicles, and brought out the difference between these. It is this comparative study which has led me to a joint discussion on the historical data of a few maheikavyas such as the Prthvirdjavijaya and the Hammiramahakavya, the Dvyadsraya and the Kirtikaumudi, the Sukrtasamkirtana and the Vasantavilasa, in so far as they record the accounts of similar characters and dynasties. In the appendix, I have given genealogical tables based on different sources. They have been most useful to me for comparative purposes.
In the end, it is my most pleasant duty to thank my super-visor Dr. Satya Vrat who painstakingly went through the whole manuscript and corrected it. The authorities of the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library, Madras, have supplied me with a transcript copy of the manuscript of the Seluvabhyudaya in their possession. To them too, I offer my sincerest thanks. My thanks are due also to Messrs Meharchand Lachhmandas who have taken great pains in carrying out the publication of this thesis.
