This Book, "Hindu Culture Custom and Ceremony" is written in pursuance of a long cherished project that I have had in view. It is, in fact, my continuing effort and endeavour to communicate more meaningfully to a cross-cultural situation the Hindu essence of spirituality, its purity, its simplicity and its awareness of human divinity. And for this, I seek to utilize the inspiration, discipline and insight which I have acquired over these years.
Hindu Culture is a great challenge to developing humanity as it had never existed before. This challenge could not be met by mere excitement of drugs or violence or sex but by calm, cool and quiet thinking. The whole world has realized, this ultimate truth of the Hindu Culture that more than economic, resources, basic thinking people like Hindu Saints are needed to meet this challenge of the present day strife and confusion.
In preparing this book from various collections, essays, opinions, commentaries, speeches, etc. my indebtedness has really been great. Mr. Ashok Jambhekar, Assistant Librarian of Indian Council of World Affairs, New Delhi has generously given permission to use their library facilities. Ramakrishna Mission Library in New Delhi has also been a great source of inspiration for collection of materials for this book.
I like to thank Mr. M.L. Renjen, the former Principal of the Central Air Force School, New Delhi, currently the Education Adviser to Mr. Satya Paul of the well known Apeejay-Surrendra Industrial House of all India repute, for reading my manuscript, but with a gratitude that leaves him happily free of my responsibility for any aberration. I need to thank specially Mr. K.D. Thomas for his cheerful labour on an exacting secretarial task and timely co-operation.
Finally, my humble gratitude is to my respected father and mother who have been able to mould my present thought-pattern and attitude to life responsible for the greatest single impetus of writing this book.
