Preface

Modern lifestyle is posing a serious challenge to human health. The fast pace of ever changing trends in modern life is causing physical, moral, mental and spiritual problems. Chaos and confusion, stress and tension, commercialization and competition in every walks of life has lead to a situation where man is finding itself helpless regarding his personal health and hygiene. An individual who comes to this earth has every right to enjoy each every gift of nature, to live freely and happily. Technological advancement has resulted in reduction of physical labour and increased mental labour. Tough mental labour in turn has resulted in psychosomatic disorders such as hypertension, diabetes, insomnia, acidity and gastric problems. Basically these disorders are caused due to faulty eating habits, stressful working conditions, lack of physical exercises and proper rest.

Yoga is the only possible remedy to counter these hazardous habits. Practice of yogic principles and virtues are the only means wherein an individual can make his life happy and free from miseries. This requires sustained and regular practice so as to dis-cover the effectiveness of this ancient technique.

Health and fitness is the concern of each and every per- son. The present work aims to enlighten the masses about the concept of pain and pleasure, temporal and transcendental health, his- tory and origin of yoga, types of yoga with special reference to Hatha Yoga and Hatha Yogic practices, alongwith diet and meditation and usefulness of yogic practices therapeutically. Hope this book will act as a catalyst to show the correct path to those people who have lost the sight of knowledge and wisdom.

Foreword

Yoga is the ancient cultural heritage of India. It has come down from the traditions of rishis and sages to the present foreword in which a common man is interested so as to achieve the goal of body, mind and soul equanimity. Yoga is the only technique by which physical and mental health can be achieved. The goal of human life is to attain moksha and Yoga is the only means to achieve it. Yoga has become very popular these days as it helps the human beings to develop their mind and intellect leading to realization of ultimate reality.

The growing stress and strain in every walk of life has led to a situation of deteriorating health and hygiene. Health is a matter of greater concern these days. People are becoming more aware of the importance and role of health in leading a happy and fruitful life.

In the above context, this book titled HATHA YOGA FOR HUMAN HEALTH has an important role to play. It contains the aspects of human life in which desires, emotions, conflicts and stress have an incredible impact on the health of an individual. Describing the history of yoga tradition this book deals with yogic practices, which are helpful in managing disorders caused by the modern lifestyle.

I sincerely hope that this book will be of immense value to the readers, students and practitioners of Yoga. Also the book will redeem our collective efforts in promotion of total health for all. I appreciate the consistent efforts put in by Dr. Nitin Korpal and Dr. Ganesh Shankar in bringing out the title in its present form.
