Book Description
About The Book

Padam Shree Gurdial Singh (10 January, 1933-16 August, 2016) is one of the most respected and the best-known Punjabi fiction writer of the twentieth century Deeply located in his socio-cultural and historical background, he is a very conscious craftsman and pays minute attention to his subjects and techniques. He is a socially conscious artist who, from a broadly humanistic perspective, sensitively analyses and portrays important issues and concerns in the narratives and essays that are highly readable and enjoyable in original as well as in translation. He published ten novels, nearly fifteen collections of short stories, a few plays, nearly a dozen books for children and innumerable articles in different newspapers and magazines. He translated almost all his novels and more than forty short stories into Hindi. Much of his work has been translated into other Indian regional and many international languages. His translated work has been received quite well, all over the world. His contribution to Punjabi (Indian) literature has been properly recognised with many reputed awards and honours being bestowed on him. In addition to award of highest literary honour Jnanpith (1999) and Padam Shree (1998) by Government of India, his work has been appreciated by both the reading public and literary/critical circles. Gurdial Singh belongs to the culturally rich Malwa region of Punjab which had not been adequately represented in literature up to mid-twentieth century Gurdial Singh, as a 'regional' fiction writer, was instrumental in giving much needed representation to this south western region of Punjab, bordering Rajasthan and Haryana.
