Dr. Mohammed Haroon aftercompleting 40 years of his professional career in Librarianship has recently retire as Deputy Librarian from Delhi University Library System, University of Delhi. He has obtained post-graduate degrees in Political Science (1971), Persian (1985) Library and Information Science (1982) and Ph.D in Music (2002) from University of Delhi. Dr. Haroon has authored nine books on library science and music. He has contributed two research papers on indian Muslim names in international conferences. In addition to this many articles have been published in various Indian journals. Because of his multi disciplinary approach, for his articles, he has ventured into the subjects that are more or less untouched by writers.
This volume is a collection of research papers by teachers published in Vageeshwari, a journal being brought out regularly by Music Department, University of Delhi. To me such publications are needed because: (a) The journal are important source of vital new or less known information that are widely consulted by scholars. Normally all music journals are not subscribed in a music library and this restrict their access to new and old published materials. (b) We do not have sufficient music journals and whatever was available has decreased year by year. As a music librarian I am a witness to many good music periodicals that after long struggle for survival lost the battle and landed into ‘ceased publication’ category. This literature soon will be out reach for music students. (c) The production quality of majority music journals is of average clas. The paper used in most cases is not good. With passing of time the pages becomes pale and briftle. To save these, the librarians shift them to ‘rear book section’ under lock and key. All the members do not have access to such collection. the journal Vageeshwari’ is not subscribed by many music libraries. By publishing some selected articles from it. I have ‘tried to acknowledge their good research work and maket available to the music academic clientele. this work supplements the students knowledge beyond their text books. I sincerely feel that more and more such publications are neeed for our students and scholars. Arrangements To arrange the material in some helpful sequance is an important characteristic of a book. Listing the papers alphabetically by authors names or by their seiority is not a good solution So, the essay have given in minemonic hierarchy i.e. history, early texts, gharana, individuals, theory on inter-disciplinary studies, education, research and globalisation. By this the reader shall find similar topics at one place. Acknowledgements | I am thankful to all the Deans-present and past for their encouragement for such publications. I also thank the cntributors for permitting me to publish their articles. My colleague in the Library, Music Department, University of Delhi need all thanks for their fullest cooperation for this volume. I duly acknowledge the assistace from my family members. My gransons Hasay and Ayan need a member for allowing me to carry out my work at home.
