Preface

The traditional cultures of our nation has got its own significance. These cultures may differ from State to State. But in every State the method of living in villages and their habits are worth mentioning. The way of worship of God, the method of Celebration of family deity, the performance of birth and death ceremonies. puberty and marriage functions dance and music will reveal their traditional cultures of the land.
Gondala is a special kind of traditional worshipping method of a family deity followed in Maharashtra State. In this small book the story of the Folklore as well as the leather instrument Samela (Chaundaka) used for playing this type of song and also about the strings are narrated.
The Maharashtrians are worshipping Marthanda Mallari, Ambha Bhavani, Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur as their presiding deities. They perform special poojas to these deities during Navarathiri festival and also on the occasions of their household functions.
Tanjore was also ruled by the Marathas more than 180 years (A. D. 1676-1855). During their reign this method of worship was also begun to spread here. The poets who adorned the Maratha Durbar wrote many useful works in their mother tongue namely the Marathi language. The Sarasvati Mahal is publishing this manuscript from the Marathi section with text and detailed notes. Under this title "Gondalache Sahitya" there are four small pieces namely the marriages of Malasa and Banasa with Khande Rao. Kolhapur Mahalakshmi's Carita and the collected songs for Gondalas. Thiru. T. R. Bhima Rao, Marathi Pandit of this Library has edited this work in a fitting manner by giving a descriptive account of the text and introduction both in Marathi and Tamil languages for which he deserves our congratulations. It becomes our duty to thank the Government of India for their .liberal grant for this publication.
We hope that this publication will be of great help to know the traditional cultures of the Maharashtrians and will find a place in the History of Marathi Literature.
