Gold is the most important of precious metals and has been used for centuries for its monetary value, beauty and practical application. Gold was first discovered by humans in Spanish caves c. 40,000 BCE and has been used extensively ever since. The Egyptians valued the metal for the construction of sacred gold artifacts, often buried with the very wealthy. Gold was subsequently found in artefacts in Bulgaria and the Balkans up until eighth century BCE. With the Romans came innovation, the invention of metallurgy and hydraulic mining methods. The Romans were, of course, the first civilization to "monetize" gold.
