About The Book

Ask anyone you know the following questions: Have you secured your investments for the future? Have you planned your vacation for the year? Have you taken medical insurance? Have you applied for your housing loan?

Chances are that all the answers you receive will be in the affirmative.

Ask the same people this question: Have you set the goal of your life? Have you thought about how you will achieve it?

Perhaps you will meet with bewilderment and blank looks!

Strange, but true, we plan for every eventuality of life, but we hardly stop to think about the ultimate purpose, the goal of human life, the Liberation which we all long to achieve. But we need not despair, for help is at hand with Rev. Dada J. P. Vaswani's inspirational, yet eminently practical guide to sadhana the means of achieving the ultimate goal of human life.

If you thought that sadhana is for ascetics, renunciates and monks, you will soon realise that sadhana is for you and me - for children, teenagers, professionals, householders as well as seekers on the path. To each, his own path, beautifully mapped with Rev. Dada's own guidelines.

Now, you no longer have to put off thinking about those vital issues that really matter in life: everything about sadhana is set out for your reading and assimilation, in a simple, practical and easy-to-follow manual for achieving the goal of your life!

Foreword

Why is the human birth so precious? The answer is simple. It is only through the human birth that we can attain liberation. It is only through the human birth that we can rid ourselves of the burden of karma and break from the bonds of life, death and rebirth. That is why it is said that even in the heavenly world, the denizens yearn for the human birth. The purpose of the human birth is to work towards a higher life, the life beautiful. But sadly, many of us fritter away this life in worthless pursuits, little realising the value of that which we throw away so carelessly.

It is strange, but we look for value addition in everything we do. We question the worth and the price we pay for everything, including medical treatment and education. A man who undergoes knee replacement surgery asks his surgeon, "For how many years will this knee be good for me?" A student who joins the MBA programme demands to know whether it will fetch her a job that will recover her fees in two months. "What am I going to get out of this?" is a constant refrain in business, investment and trade.

Are you asking yourself the same kind of questions about your life? Are you living your precious human life meaningfully, consciously, purposefully?

I know that the answer to that question is not easy! But you will agree with me that we need to think about it, at least occasionally.

True, we all love life! We want to make the most of it. We long for happiness, peace and fulfillment in all that we do. But do we know the purpose of this life, the goal of this life?

The meaning of life has been one of the fundamental issues in philosophy, theology and religion. Since the dawn of civilisation, men of thought have grappled with such questions as: Who am I? Where do I come from? Whither am I going? What is the purpose for which I was born? How may I fulfill that purpose?

When you begin to ask these questions of yourself, you begin to realise that there is much more to life than seeking pleasure, worldly success, material wealth or even happiness. Somehow, all these 'desires’ are short-lived as far as fulfillment is concerned. There must be more to life than this, you feel.
