Professor Ram Karan Sharma is one of the most outstanding scholars and creative writers in Sanskrit of this age. He has rendered valuable services for the cause of Sanskrit earlier as Vice chancellor of two Sanskrit universities in the country and as Director of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan; and presently as President of International Association of Sanskrit Studies.
This octogenarian scholar, poet and philosopher is indeed an epitome of the values imbued in Sanskrit culture. His writings- be it his research works or his exquisite poems in Sanskrit-reveal a living life style where classicism and modernity go hand in hand together. He has presented some unknown aspects of the Great Epic by his 'Elements of Poetry in the Mahabhdrata' (Berkeley, 1964), a thesis produced by him as Fulbright Scholar at the University of California under Professor M. B. Emeneau. A Feliciation Volume entitled 'Modern Evaluation of the Mahabharata' edited by S. P. Narang (Delhi, 1995) was indeed a befitting tribute to his valuable contribution to the studies on the Epic. Being a versatile scholar, trained through both the traditional and modern methods of the study of Sanskrit, the academic pursuits and investigations of Prof. Sharma are spread in almost all the nooks and corners of the vast domain of Indological researches, and his Sanskrit poetry reveals the vast specturm of themes, both modern and ancient, a subtle imagery and rare sensitivity combined with the sublime. It was, therefore, in the fitness of things that another felicitation volume covering a wider scope, be brought out to honour the services rendered by this true devotee of Sarasvati. Srutimahati comprises all the areas, which have been covered by Prof. Sharma in his studies - Veda, Vyakarana, Epics and Purartas, Ayurveda, Poetics and Aesthetics, Manu-scriptology, Classical Sanskrit Literature, Modern Sanskrit Literature, Arts and Technical Sciences etc. I am extremely grateful to all scholars who promptly sent their articles at our request.
Elsewhere the present author has proposed a new classification of literary authors on the basis of five elements. There are authors whose writings are deeply rooted in the soil or earth below their feet, there are authors who have a tendency to flow like running waters, there are authors burning like fire, there are authors soaring above like winds and there are authors whose creativity transcends all limitations and narrow ranges like space.
