Book Description
About The Book

On account of its unique geographical position, Gilgit occupies a place of great strategic importance for the subcontinent of India and Pakistan. In the words of Lord Curzon, the illustrious viceroy of the British in pre independence India, it is one of the northern gates of India, through which a would-be invader must advance. Even today, Gilgit is a meeting ground of many close neighbours like Afghanistan, China, India, Pakistan and Russia. The author has described the events, which led to the subjugation of Gilgit by the then Dogra rulers of Kashmir and subsequent lease of the region to the then British government in India. It also reveals the conspiracies of the British in engineering a revolt in the region, in 1947 and the arrest of Brigadier Gansara Singh, the last Dogra governor of Ladakh.
Based on original sources, this book is the only available work exposing the British diplomacy in Gilgit.
