Maharși Patanjali Stands out as one of the mightiest trees of wisdom to have emerged from the fertile soil of ancient India's traditions.Scholars and academics share different opinions about the time and place in history of this unique sage. From the contents of the Yoga- Sūtras we can derive that he was a great master of the Samkhya tradition founded by Sage Kapila, a tradition which flourished from the earliest times of recorded history. Samkhya presents a unique view of reality: Primordial Nature (Pradhana or Prakṛti), which is inert yet ever changing and undergoing transformation, manifests myriad possibilities for Consciousness (Puruşa) to make experiences and eventually attain liberation. Bound up in the cycle (Samsara) of these experiences - suffering throughout an unceasing chain of births and deaths - Consciousness is liberated only when it completely realises its own ever-pure nature which is vivid like a colourless crystal in which all colours can appear (Sūtra 1.41).
