Preface

The idea of bringing out 'A Basic Course in Bodo' is to meet one of the primary aims and objectives of North-Eastern Regional Language Centre (NERLC), Guwahati. NERLC is one of the seven Regional Language Centres established in different regional locations across the country by Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysuru. Four scheduled languages of India, namely Assamese, Bodo, Manipuri and Nepali are taught as second languages in this Centre.

This is a basic conversational material reflecting different daily life language situations. It is a direct second language teaching tool with the help of translation in English and Hindi. Thus, this material itself is a tool for implementing three language formula on the other hand for Bodo native speakers to learn the Rastrabhasha Hindi and English throught their mother tongue. The accommodation of all the basic linguistic features in this. material is an attempt to teach the learners all the basic linguistic patterns and structures of the language.

The contents of this material have been arranged from easy to difficult level to develop learning step by step. Though atleast one linguistic feature is introduced in a lesson, the names of the lessons are not given after the linguistic features rather concerned speech situations are taken to be the names of the lessons to make learning easy and natural for every layperson.

Needless to say that the idea of bringing out 'A Basic Course in Bodo' is adapted from the Intensive Course Series started with the publication of An Intensive Course in Kashmiri An Intensive Course in Kashmiri (1985) by Omkar N. Koul and An Intensive Course in Punjabi (1985) by Motia Bhatia. The only difference between Intensive Course Series and Basic Course Series is that the former is a very big volume of around 1000 pages designed for a long term course providing a thorough detail and repetitive exercises about the concerned language. Whereas, the latter is designed based on the duration of the language learning course providing most if not all the features of the concerned language. Anyway, we followed the framework of this pioneering work by them to prepare this volume. We are always grateful to them for their pavement to bring out this volume.

Foreword

The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year after completing 50 years of excellence. The Institute was established on July 17, 1969 by the Government of India in Mysuru to help in evolving and implementing the language policy of the Government and to coordinate the development of Indian Languages by conducting research in the areas of language analysis, language pedagogy, language technology and language use in the society.

It began its journey with several units of research such as Tribal and Border Languages, Sociolinguistics, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, Material Production and Training, Testing and Evaluation, Educational Technology, Lexicography and Translation, Cartography, Folklore and Computer Applications. In addition to this, seven Regional Language Centres were set up at Mysuru, Patiala, Bhubaneswar, Pune, Lucknow, Solan and Guwahati with a goal of implementing the three language formula and thereby contribute to national integration. These Centres offer a 10 month Diploma in Language Education in second languages and teach 20 Indian languages to non native speakers mainly to in service teachers, prospective teachers, research scholars and general public. CIIL was one of the few institutions that initiated work on natural language processing in the early 1990s. It has interdisciplinary academic collaborations with various institutions at both national and international levels. The Institute is well recognised by the academic fraternity across the globe for the quality of its wide-ranging linguistic research and language studies.
