The theme deals with the religious philosophy of Gautama Buddha who renounced the royal robes and power, became a monk and ultimately founded Buddhism which spread in several regions of India and the neighbouring countries. Buddha travelled widely and his philosophy greatly attracted people who became his ardent disciples. As a result several viharas were inaugurated where the main emphasis was on the life of piety and social service. The chapters thus deal with moksha, Mahayana, discipline and enlightenment, social foundations, moral precepts, four truths and the middle path, missionary life and its concept and Buddhism as an institutional religion.

This work would be useful for teachers, students and the learned persons, in India and abroad, who are interested in the socio-religious philosophy of Gautama Buddha.

Dr. S.R. Bakshi, Ph.D., D.Litt. is an eminent. scholar of Modern Indian History and is the author of several works on Indian nationalism and freedom movement. His recent works include 'Encyclopaedic History of Indian Culture and Religion' (in 5 Vols.), The Great Marathas' (in 5 Vols.), The Great Rajputs' (in 6 Vols.), 'B.R. Ambedkar: His Political and Social Ideology' (in 2 Vols.), 'Encyclopaedic History of The Sikhs and Sikhism' (in 6 Vols.), The Great Moghuls' (in 8 Vols.), and Development of Women, Children and Weaker Sections' (in 5 Vols.). Dr. Bakshi is member of several academic institutions having deep bearing on historical research.

Dr. Sangh Mittra, LL.B. Ph.D. from Lucknow University, is Dy. Director (Research) in Indian Council of Historical Research. Her Ph.D. thesis on 'Iconographic Study of Minor Brahmanical Deities in Northern India' is published along with more than 20 Research Papers in reputed historical journals. She is Life Member of several academic institutions and a reputed examiner of Ph.D. thesis of Universities of North India. Besides she has actively participated in numerous national and international Seminars.

Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Gautama Buddha showed the signs of renunciation at an early stage of his career. Happily married and having a son, he took little interest in family life and made a firm decision to carve out a life totally different from domestic environments, which he gave up for all time to come. Soon he toured several regions of India and the message based on truth, non-violence and righteousness spread in urban and rural areas, of Indian sub-continent as well as abroad.

He gave vent to his feelings quite openly about the eight- fold path which his followers would follow so that their life could be the real example for millions of people living in the far- flung areas. These eight principles were as follows:

1. right knowledge. 2. right determination. 3. right. conversation. 4. right character. 5. right way of life. 6. right approach. 7. right attention. 8. right perseverance.
