About The Book

History is not the dried up womb of dead acts. But its pastness is the beaconlight for realising the present happenings and oncoming future. History is the ultimate mast in the region of uncertainties. Struggle for freedom is a long broad spectrum in the Indian History. The present free India is a gift and this gift is presented to us by sacrificing blood and sweat. So many words have been spent, to glorify their priceless dedication. But such glorification is nothing but adding a drop of water into the ocean. It is a great honour for me that I am having a chance to pay my tribute to those priceless souls. This is my first translatory work and I have tried to decorate the book founding the design of Dr. Nanigapal Devdas who is the author of the book. I am really grateful to Mr. Nigomananda Mondal and his associates who have focussed the spotlight upon such a humble figure like me. At the same time am thanking Mr. Nandalal Panja who is the Chief inspiration for me in this project. I am also indebted to Mr. Subas Chandra Panja and Mrs. Sikha Panja. Lastly, I hope, readers will get apology from this blooming translator as it is the first attempt-humble attempt.

As a popular and renowned doctor he was very closely involved with the major stream of life of Bogura and other districts from the decade of 40's. Simple living style, sweet behaviour, dedication in work, heart felt love and sympathy for the downtrodden people always creamed with completely different personality (a personality of an ideal man). As a doctor he was closely associated with the various medical institutions like Medical College, Chittaranjan Shishusadan, Bogura School Hospital etc. He tried his best to unite the doctors through founding and directing Indian Medical Association (1940-47) and later on Bogura Branch of Pakistan Medical Association. He accepted the membership offered by the National Awami Party (NAP) As a worker of multifarious active social services he supported many terrorists and political personalities by providing them shelter and help in many ways. In 1953 as a leader of the opponent party he strongly critisied the faults and corruptions of the ruling society. He composed some medical books, some research papers which are of international standard for the national and international magazines. At the same time he penned down many scholarly creative literary pieces in his student life. His five major poetical works are the strong reflections of his deep feelings about motherland, freedom and various intricate corridors of human mind and sentiments. He translated more than hundred heart rendering songs of Lalan Fakir, the greatest figure in the realm of Baul of Bengal. The biographies of the great personalities of the world are also published by him. Even he composed 'Sadhinata Sangrami Charitrabidhan' in which he paid his homage to those who had shed their blood for the sake of the independence of India. Taking an active role in the freedom struggle of Bangladesh in 1971 he directed efficiently, in the border area of North Bengal help camps and the Para-medical teaching camps for the freedom fighters. He also seriously served his duties as a Chairman for the first literary consortium which was presided by Manoj Basu. As a Founder cum President of the drama society of Bogura he took an active role in the newly born renaissance of drama in Bangladesh. As a Founder-cum- Editor and as the central figure he established (Profulla Chaki Memorial Committee-1980) in which all the major national freedom fighters, intellectuals and political personalities were included and at the same time he established All-India Profulla-Chaki Centenary Celebration Committee. To pay his respectful homage to the other great freedom fighters like Surya Sen, Khudiram Bose he celebrated their 100th birth anniversary. In 1995 in Calcutta he took an active part in grass-root level to successfully organize the International Anti-Fascism Consortium. Arriving at the age of 87 he has perfectly kept alive his thinkings and actions by musing upon the dangers and possibilities of present India.

Preface

"Service for the motherland should never be treated as a matter of hollow promise, it should be applied with a true heart. It is infact the greatest task to perform for a man. A real devotee of his country should never think about the trivial matters like fame, fortune and money. He should always be a selfless person. Undomitable courage will be his anchor. His concern will be only with his country and as a lover of his country, nothing will remain in between these two broad polars. He who can sacrifice reputation, fortune, sorrow, pain, sin and all other things for the sake of his country, will serve his country to the peak of perfection. If someone can't sacrifice his reputation then how will he sacrifice to a greater context?

None cares for the freedom of motherland. Everybody wants reputation. Most of the people want to be the leader by exhaling the hollow orations. A very few persons feel the real pathos of dependence. What are the things we are observing with which we will be optimistic about our country? The children of our country will die being attacked by Maleria and still we will not be able to sacrifice our life for the sake of our country. If we are to tolerate criticising for our motherland, if we are to die for our country, then we are really fortunate persons. Such lucky persons are very few among us. Is there any person who is realy to die for India? Is there any person who is realy to sacrifice his all for India? That day the dreams of India will be fulfilled when a real selfless person will be born.

The positive struggle of the glorious past along with its highest achievements can construct perfectly the future of a nation. But in the present India we see that the vicious leaders are trying to abolish the bright possibilities of the glorious past. Now a days they aim at making the people a pack of aimless beasts by derailing them from their precious qualities and it is their 'broad' purpose. In this very crucial juncture the bright aspects of our history and tradition should be focused in front of the wayward generation. The influencing events of history and the priceless learnings should be noted in a well-mannered way. This is the very basic appeal of the book.

Introduction

Being charged by Profulla Chaki one of the powerful atom of Indian freedom fighting Dr. Nanigopal Devdas dedicated himself in the thunderous tract of national freedom movement of India. Later he came into close contact with the Communist World while he was a student of Carmichael Medical College. In 1936 he passed the medical examination winning a gold medal. As a dutiful doctor he served the common folks of Bogura and inspired them to wakeup and dedicate themselves in the stream which was created to oppose strongly the fatal Fascism. In this way he attached himself with the streams of two fold of the freedom fighting movement and strongly being involved into social works maintained his duties of a doctor and in this way he became a famous person not only in Bogura but also outside Bogura. The famous composer of 'Nakshi Kanthar Math' poet Jasimuddin dignified him by euloziging him as 'Hridayban Chikitshak' (A hearty doctor). After the seperation of India he remained in Pakistan and there he was associated with the Medical Association and other miscellaneous associations. In 1975 Sk. Mujibar Rahaman, the friend of Bengal was killed and so it became utterly impossible for him to stay in Bangladesh. The weight of old age could only bend him physically. It never marred his titanic mental energy which is clearly evident in his deep involvement in the field of literature and of course in his own profession. He was greatly interested about Profulla Chanki and he collected various important documents about him to highlight him as a real freedom - fighter. About the rebellions he organized many valuable solemn meetings and exhibitions. I had the chance to take part in his programmes and I was really a lucky persons. As a man of letters Dr. Devdas also achieved fame. When he was a prisoner of Rajsahi Jail in Purba Pakistan the songs of Lalan Fakir deeply stirred his inner core. Recently he has translated fifty-six songs of Lalan Fakir in English. To celebrate the platinum jubille of Indian freedom movement with a superior grace and dignity he composed 'Swadhinata Sangrami Charitrabidhan" and thus paid his deep respect for the immoratal stars of Indian Freedom Movement. He grows melancholic thinking about the waywardness of the modern generation of India. But at the same time he finds the way of hope thinking that history will certainly repeat itself.

The depth of this thinking dazzled in his writing. In this book he has dealt with the important historical events (1600-1947) studying which will not only move the students but also general readers and researchers who will get a crystal clear veiw of the grand period of Indian history. I firmly believe that this book will be highly praised by them as a 'Guide Book'. I pay my heart felt thanks to Dr. Nonigopal Devdas for his such a valuable creation.
