Dr Karan Singh is a distinguished philanthropist, educationist, writer and Indian politician whose special interests include Hinduism, the environment, education, harmony, literature and music. He served as the first and last Sadr-i-Riyasat and Governor of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. He has more than 25 published books to his credit, which include poetry collections, essay collections, books of national importance etc. He has also brought out Audio/Video cassettes - The Message of Vedantas (a set of three video cassettes of Upanishads, Bhagwadgita and Sri Aurobindo). He represented India at important international conferences and has given lectures in five continents on philosophy, culture and environment. He was the youngest person to become a central Cabinet Minister and given the portfolio of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. He also served as the Minister for Health and Family Planning as well as the Minister of Education and Culture. He served as the Ambassador of India to USA; President, People's Commission on Environment and Development and Indian Council for Cultural Relations. He is the Founder of Virat Hindu Samaj, which seeks social reforms as the basis of universal vedantic values. He was also appointed as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University and Jammu & Kashmir University. He served as Chairman of Auroville Foundation, Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha, member of Standing Committee on External Affairs, Member, Consultative Committee of Home Affairs. He is the recipient of several awards and honours including Padma Vibhushan by the President of India, honorary doctorates from the Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University and Soka University, Tokyo (Japan), National Integration Award, and representative of India on the Executive Board of UNESCO.
