Book Description
Preface

Folk orography in North East India is a collection of seminar papers presented in various national seminars in North East India over the years. The collection of twenty-one papers was done by Dr. Soumen Sen. He proposed to get the collection of papers published by ABILAC. He suggested the name of the book to be Folklorography in North East India. The term "folklorography'is coined by Dr. Soumen Sen and he has great attachment to the term. In one of the essays titled "Meditating the Oral and the Written: The Mangal Kavya Tradition of West Bengal and a Problematic of Folklorography" in his book Folklore, Tradition, Identity (2010) published by Anjali Publications, Kolkata he has written, "I have used the term, folk orography in this paper, with a clear intent. It is a copy, a borrowing, from the concept of historiography much in use in current trends in history-writing replacing such words as historical research or writing history. In such an approach history is viewed as catastrophic and always in crisis. It challenges any sort of "master code", explodes "bland continuity" and presents history as a constellation. It therefore, contradicts the conventions in writing history.

Historiography has been translated in Bangla as Itihas Charcha.

Charcha a tatsama(equivalent to sanskritic)word, carries with it multiple meaning. It means alochana, discussion as in Hindi. It means a dialogue between two persons (paraspar charcha). It is close to gossiping or talking or discussing about another person (paracharcha). It can be used in describing the process of enhancing the facial beauty (rupcharcha) or hair-do (kasha charcha). In academia the word charcha is variably used to mean alochana (discussion), anushilan (practice), anusandhan(equiry), parjyalochana (analytical discussion), etc.
