Wetlands ore ecologically us well as economically essential systems which harbour precious natural resources and play a crucial role in the various hydrological cycle, carbon sequestration, and global greenhouse gas emission. The wetlands act as buffers for terrestrial run-off and thus prevent eutrophication of inland and coastal waters Further, it not only acts as a reservoir of biodiversity but also triggers the mass movement of the living creature, i.e., a refuge for migratory birds However, due to anthropogenic activity and climate change, the wetlands are under high pressure not only in India but globally, and our understanding of the various life forms a harbours remains far from complete. Currently, there are around 2,390 Ramsor sites around the world, of them, India has 37 Ramsor sites Freshwater biodiversity provides a broad spectrum of invaluable ecosystem services, besides a wide range of goods and services for human societies. Water lands provide multiple services, including imgation, domestic water supply, freshwater fisheries and water for recreation. Bhopal wetland is one of the Ramsor site, which is a unique human-mode wetland, in the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Ever since the lake was constructed in the 11 century, the Bhopal city has grown around a The wetland supports a wide variety of flora and fauna Under the Bhopal Lake Conservation and Management Project, regular water quality monitoring of both the lakes was being done But minimal studies were conducted on the faunal composition of the lake.
Zoological Survey of India under its mandate attempted to study the Faunal Diversity of Bhoj Wetland, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh during three years of the project, surveys were conducted in 16 randomly selected sampling sites. The collection of various freshwater and terrestrial faunal species were mode using standard methodologies. The present book provides information about the faunal diversity of Bhoj Wetland, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. A total of 1,054 species belonging to 752 genera and 285 families are reported and documented in the book. Of these, 512 species are invertebrates and 542 species pertaining to vertebrates including fishes (86 species), amphibians (9 species) reptiles (43 species), birds (357 species), and mammals (32 species) The consolidated information will serve as a useful aid to researchers and managers for formulating policies in effective conservation and management planning of the ecological restoration of the Bhoj Wetland.
