The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) is one of the premier research organization of Government of India, performing under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and committed to document the faunal resources of States & UTs of India for their conservation, management and sustainable utilization. So far, ZSI has published faunal diversity of 23 States and Union Territories (UTs) of the country for creating awareness of the fauna of the respective states as per CBD obligations. The present book presents the faunal diversity of Haryana State with an area of c. 44,222 km² (4.42 million ha) which includes two National parks and eight wildlife sanctuaries (covering an area of 281.46 sq. km., which constitutes 0.69% of the state's geographical area.
The faunal explorations from almost all the districts of Haryana state has revealed 2490 faunal species belonging to 1421 genera in 34 major animal groups, which is nearly 2.44% of the total Indian faunal diversity (1,01,681 species). The Invertebrate animal diversity is represented by 1798 species belonging to 1017 generawhereas; the vertebrate diversity constitutes 692 species belonging to 404 genera. Interesting findings from Haryana include 117 species as new record for the state (102 species of invertebrates and 15 species of vertebrates), four new records of invertebrates fromIndia, one new species of nematode parasite including 44 threatened species of vertebrates.
I hope that the data delivered in the book will provide baseline information on the fauna of Haryana not only to the researchers, planners and policy makers, but also will be of enormous service to the State forest departments as well as for the preparation of conservation and management plans.
