More- over there are different aspects of various folktales too.each according to local environment and conventional beliefs. They give us moral teachings. Thus they are not only ecofriendly but they also ensure a society of harmony and love.
Mizoram, the land of blue mountains is a mystic land. Known as the land of hill men (Miman, Zo-hill and Ram-land), it is a land of valiant tribes like Lushai, Pawi, Paite, Ralte, Hmar etc., collectively known as Mizo tribes, besides of course the Lakhers. It is a state known for its high literacy rate and also for beautiful folktales and creative art.
This book is a collection of Fables and Folktales of Mizoram. The tales are not only useful for pleasure reading for the young and the old alike but also reflect the culture of the tribes an give and idea about their society at various times. Thus the book can be useful for research scholars, who would like to study the society and culture of Mizoram.
The stories have the beauty of mysticism which has been reflected well in de- veloped literature of oriental society later on. The book is written by authors who spent their valuable years in North-East India.
G. K. GHOSH, a graduate in Chemical Engineering is a prolific writer who wrote over 15 books on environment, anthropo- logy, women development, literature, beekeeping and so on. He had presented over 20 papers in the section of anthropo- logy and archeology in Indian Science Congress. He had also written articles, poems etc., in Oriya, Bengali and English published in various periodicals. He was .posted for over four years in North Eastern India therefor he could collect a number of folk tales of the region.
SHUKLA GHOSH, a graduate from. University of Calcutta and a graduate in Music from Prayag Sangit Samaj, is a prolific writer who presented four papers in the section of anthropology and archeology in Indian Science Congress. A book on Indian textile jointly written by her published recently. She was in North Eastern India for over four years and collected a number of folk tales which she proposes to publish in series.
The State of Mizoram situated at the southernmost part of North Eastern India, surrounded by Myanmar, Bangladesh, Assam, Tripura and Manipur. The term Mizoram literally means land of hillmen (Miman, Zohill and Ram land). Until a few decades ago it was a part of Assam, known as Lushai hill district. The hilly state of Mizoram is well known today for its high literacy rate. It comes next only to Kerala. It is also known for the highly developed craft and colourful folk dances full of acrobatics. The land is also known for its scenic beauty and natural resources. People have rich folk culture and literature but most of the literatures were lost due to absence of a script.
The land belongs to a number of tribes, broadly divided into two groups, the Mizos and the Lakhers (or the Maras). The Mizo tribe again is not a single tribe but a combination of a number of tribes, six major and eleven minor. Eleven minor tribes are together known as Awzias. Out of the six major tribes Lushai dominates both in administration and population. The Lushai tribe is again dominated by the Sailoes. Most of the Mizo chiefs are Sailoes. Lakhers however stand apart. They not only inhabit different geographical regions but have their own distinct culture and administrative setup. But after the formation of the state of Mizoram, Mizos have begun to dominate.
The myths, fables and folk tales of Mizoram are born out of various beliefs and eco friendly. Many of them were historically correct but have not been recorded due to the absence of scripts, thus becoming parts of folk tales or myths. This book is not only a collection of folk tales which give a picture of the society and culture but also good for pleasure reading. Names of the tribes are given in the brackets.
