Introduction

Arunachal Pradesh till few decades back was known as North Eastern Frontier Agency is the home of a number of tribes. The state may be termed as the land of sunrise since it is in this part of India that the first ray of Sun kisses Indian soil. Often referred as mystic land due to various mystic cults that dominate the life of people.

The state may be divided into three parts according to faith and religious beliefs. The western Arunachal Pradesh is dominated by the Buddhist culture of Mahayana cult influenced by Tibet. The Central Arunachal Pradesh have their own cult called Dono-Polo based on nature worship although some influence of Buddhism cannot be totally ruled out. The Eastern Arunachal Pradesh have three different cults. One group of tribes believe in Buddism of Hinayana cult. The second group have the faith of nature worship while a few others believe in Vaisnavism of Sankardeva school due to influence of Assam. But it is said both Buddhists as well as Vaisnavs had their own cult of nature worship prior to conversation during different parts of history.

The folk tales of all these tribes had the influences of various cults. Many of the folk tales were actually historical facts which could not be documented as history due to absence of scripts but became the part of folk literature.

Folk literature of any country or region is always considered as the father of organised literature, since it was those folk literature or myths that gave the foundation of future literary growth. Arunachal Pradesh is no exception. Many of the folk tales could become part of mythology hence are considered as sacred. Many of these folk tales also gives us idea about the society of various tribes during different parts of history.

Attempts are made here to collect and compile various folk tales of Arunachal Pradesh with the purpose for researchers to study, to give pleasure to Children as well as adults alike. Many are recorded here while many are left out. Many folk tales might have lost forever. Yet attempt to compile here may serve various purpose including preventing them to evaporate.

Name of the tribe and subtribe are given inside the bracket.
