Introduction
The present book is an outcome of the 150th anniversary of the Revolt of 1857 seminar held at Jadavpur University in June 2007. There are 13 important contributions reinterpreting the Revolt of 1857 by specialists in their own unique way.

The first article is by Chittabrata Palit who highlights the role of Sir Saiyyid Ahmad Khan in the Revolt of 1857. Sir Saiyyid disowns the Jihadis as true followers of Islam and gives a blueprint of a progressive Muslim nations based on collaboration with the British. In the next article Hitendra K Patal examines the emergence of Rani Lakshmi Bai as an Icon in Modern Hindi literature. In the following article Avijit Dutta deals with public execution during 1857 of the Gond Raja Sanear Shah and his son Raghunath Shah in Retaliation of the rebel’s violence and it’s gruesome, nature. Md. Khairul Anam reflects on the regional response of the people of Mursidabad to the Revolt of 1857. Goutam basu next tress the impact of 1857 in Bengali Novels in the aftermath of the Revolt, Anuradha Roy drown a comparison of the attitudes of the Bengali Intelligentsia as an imagined community towards the felt community of rebels of 1857. It's sequel is taken up by Malabika Ray in her essay on changing Bengali attitudes.
