Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the study of cultural variation among humans. Cultural anthropologists systematically explore topics such as technology and material culture, social organization, economies, political and legal systems, language, ideologies and religions, health and illness, and social change. Cultural anthropology is the study of human ways of life in the broadest possible comparative perspective. The book presents anthropology as a set of tools for both research strategies and a set of practical ideas that help us better understand and engage the world around us. The aim of cultural anthropology is to document the full range of human cultural adaptations and achievements and to discern in this great diversity the underlying covariations among and changes in human ecology, institutions and ideologies.
Rohan Kr. Singh (born. 25th January, 1974) is currently working as a professor. He did his M.A in Anthropology from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and PhD. from University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad. He has vast experience in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. He has done pioneering work in cultural development in India. He has successfully carried out several major research projects. He has organized many national and International Conferences and Training Courses. He has published over ten research papers in reputed National and International Journals. He has authored/edited more than three books and is the editor of prestigious International Journals.
Anthropology is the scientific study of humans and their cultural, social, biological, and environmental aspects of life in the past and the present. Cultural anthropology is one of four areas of study in the broader field of anthropology (archeology, physical or biological anthropology, and linguistics being the other three). Cultural anthropologists specialize in the study of culture and peoples' beliefs, practices, and the cognitive and social organization of human groups. Cultural anthropologists study how people who share a common cultural system organize and shape the physical and social world around them, and are in turn shaped by those ideas, behaviors, and physical environments.
Cultural anthropology is hallmarked by the concept of culture itself. While many definitions of "culture" have been offered and discussed in the academic literature for 100 years, a simple, yet complete definition of culture is "the knowledge people use to live their lives and the way in which they do so" (Handwerker 2002).
Cultural anthropology has a rich methodology, including participant observation (often called fieldwork because it requires the anthropologist spending an extended period of time at the research location), interviews, and surveys.
The anthropological concept of "culture" reflects in part a reaction against earlier Western discourses based on an opposition between "culture" and "nature", according to which some human beings lived in a "state of nature". Anthropologists have argued that culture is "human nature", and that all people have a capacity to experiences, encode classifications symbolically (ie. in language), and teach such abstractions to others.
Since humans acquire culture through the learning processes of enculturation and socialization, people living in different places or different circumstances develop different cultures. Anthropologists have also pointed out that through culture people can adapt to their environment in non-genetic ways, so people living in different environments will often have different cultures. Much of anthropological theory has originated in an appreciation of and interest in the tension between the local (particular cultures) and the global (a universal human nature, or the web of connections between people in distinct places/circumstances).
The rise of cultural anthropology took place within the context of the late 19th century, when questions regarding which cultures were "primitive" and which were "civilized" occupied the minds of not only Marx and Freud, but many others. Colonialism and its processes increasingly brought European thinkers into direct or indirect contact with "primitive others." The relative status of various humans, some of whom had modern advanced technologies that included engines and telegraphs, while others lacked anything but face-to-face communication techniques and still lived a Paleolithic lifestyle, was of interest to the first generation of cultural anthropologists.
Parallel with the rise of cultural anthropology in the United States, social anthropology, in which sociality is the central concept and which focuses on the study of social statuses and roles, groups, institutions, and the relations among them-developed as an academic discipline in Britain and in France. The umbrella term socio-cultural anthropology draws upon both cultural and social anthropology traditions.
