"Essential Values in Indian Culture for Management" (of self and otherwise) is a most timely treatise prepared by Prof. S. K. Ramachandra Rao, one of our most celebrated thinkers of the day.
When the individual, the society and the country feel confused at the cross roads of value systems, the Treatise comes in handy as a signal post, indicating the most needed direction.
Prof. S. K. Ramachandra Rao has investigated the many perspectives of the vital theme with dedication, in depth research and has put the document in very simple language.
Gandhi Centre of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is indeed most grateful to the scholar and feels convinced that the treatise would be widely read for practical application. The Centre is also beholden to Shri H. V. Vishwanth of Prism Books Pvt. Ltd. for seeing through the manuscript of the Treatise.
The present crisis in public life as well the ills of family life often traced, and rightly so, to wrong value- orientations. Every culture insists that certain values of life must be carefully cultivated and protected, for the good of the individual and for the welfare of the group. In India, this has been the main concern. Our systems of philosophy (the darśanas) are in fact so many value- appraisals; our literary works are meant only to instil the proper sense of values; our religious scriptures are attempts to reinforce the most advantageous value- systems.
The value orientation in our country is based on dharma (the supportive actions and ideology in one's own life in the family and in the community), purushartha (the four-fold goals of life: kāma, artha, dharma and moksha), and rņa (three-fold indebtedness of man from his very birth: to the ancestors, to the cultural forbearers and to the protecting gods). In all walks of life, the value-orientation was insisted upon. Industry, commerce, and health-care were no exceptions.
