This collection of articles on varied and unusual subjects by a brilliant young Brahman scholar, lawyer, mystic and occultist, is a mine of information. The author, Swami T Subba Row, was born in 1856 and during the brief years before his death in 1890, he not only wrote these articles but also gave a series of lectures at the annual Convention of the Theosophical Society, later published as Philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita.
In his early years, Subba Row did not show any exceptional signs of mystical knowledge, but in his twenties knowledge welled up from within. 'It was as though a storehouse of occult experience, long forgotten, had been suddenly opened to him."
In this book, the reader will find fascinating information about the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac, the Age of Lord Buddha's Death, Nadigranthams, Hatha Yoga, the mystic significance of Indian places of pilgrimage and many other occult and recondite subjects. It will prove to be an asset for students of mystical philosophy.
T. Subba Row (1856-90) was an outstanding figure of the Theosophical Society in its carly years in India. H. P. Blavatsky had originally planned the collaboration of Subba Row with her in the production of The Secret Doctrine but this plan did not fructify, Col. H. S. Olcotr has paid the tribute to Subba Row that 'there was none equal to him in bright genius for grasping the spirit of the Ancient Wisdom"
Subba Row's philosophy was essentially Vedantic, although he was also greatly stimu lated by the Theosophy of Madame Blavatsky His meeting with her also resulted in his ob- taining conscious touch with his Master. His name is also remembered in connection with the publication of Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine, which he did not live long enough to see m print
WHILST presenting this little volume to the public, we cannot but pay due tribute to the memory of one who had done such good service to the cause of occult science. The late lamented Mr. T. Subba Row, B.A., B.L., of the Madras University, was one of the highest occultists of Southern India. We tried our utmost to collect as many facts relating to his life as we could possibly get from his relatives and friends, to enable us to write a short sketch of his life to go with this book. But, we regret to say, our endeavours in this direction have been without fruit. We have, therefore, had no alternative but to reproduce the notice of his death taken by Col. H. S. Olcott, in The Theo- sophist, in its place.
Mr. Subba Row was a member of The Theosophical Society, and was highly respected not only by all its members, but also by Madame H. P. Blavatsky, for his great erudition and proficiency in almost all the branches of occult science. Madame Blavatsky used always to consult him whenever there were difficult and intricate problems to be solved.
