Foreword I am extremely delighted to bring to the notice of the research scholars that the issue of 1976 in the series of Epigraphia Indica Arabic and Persian Supplement, edited by late Shri N.M. Ganam, the then Superintending Epigraphist for Arabic and Persian Inscriptions, is being placed in their hands. The printing of the issue was delayed due to various unforeseen factors.

The issue contains in all eleven articles, contributed by seven scholars working in the department as well as in various. other institutions. The inscriptions covered in this issue are from different states of India viz., Gujarat, Kama taka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and belong to various dynasties like the Khaljis, Tughluqs, Mughals and Rathor Chiefs of Nagaur, covering a period over 450 years (1250-1705 A.D.). Some miscellaneous epigraphs too, have been studied in this issue. All the epigraphs taken up for study here throw a welcome light on various aspects of history of the regions mentioned above.

The issue has come out of the press neatly on account of the tireless efforts of Dr. M.L Quddusi who is presently heading the Arabic & Persian wing of the Epigraphy Branch of A.S.I. at Nagpur and his colleagues, all of whom deserve a very hearty appreciation.

Preface The issue of 1976 in the series of Epigraphia Indica Arabic and Persian Supplement, edited by late Shri N.M.Ganam, former Superintending Epigraphist, contains in all eleven articles by various scholars who have been associated with the department. In this journal, 31 inscriptions, ranging in their dates between the middle of the 13th century and the first decade of the 1801 century, have been studied. These historically important epigraphs representing both the dynastic and miscellaneous ones, come from q different places situated in seven states viz., Bilram in Uttar Pradesh; Jhagar in Madhya Pradesh; Rajpur, 1alna, Rajapur and Pachad in Maharashtra; Belgaum and Siruguppa in Kamataka;Chhintanwala and Samana in Punjab; Patan in Gujarat; Nagaur and Junjala in Rajasthan. All the epigraphs chosen for study here throw a welcome light on various aspects of history of the regions mentioned above.
