In Bharat, we have a grand and sumptuous heritage of knowledge in the field of Mathematics. Since time immemorial, our Rishis-Munis have been bringing out various aspects about the Mathematical theories, the study of the planetary bodies, Astrology- Astronomy- Astrophysics and many more. This was the time when there were no computers or super- computer robot, and many other areas of artificial intelligence we talk about today. Without advanced telescopes or such other equipment’s, they were able to work out the circumference, the speed and path of their movement in the galaxy and the time taken for taking one round of many planets and the date & time of eclipses, which are proved to be nearing accuracy by the present day Science.

The World accepts Bharat as the natural father of Numerology. Jab zero diya mere Bharat ne tab duniya ko ginti aai, is though a film song, but is very close to reality. We know that the international form of numbers are called 'Hindu-Arabic Numerals' in the western world.

There seem to be two basic reasons as to why Bharat could not prove her expertise in this field for past few centuries. The System of education established by the Britishers with a view to continue their rule over this country for everlasting period, the McCauley plan was implemented, being the one; and the educationists and academicians developed out of this system did not know Sanskrit, the language in which most of the writings were done by the old mathematicians of this country, which was the other reason. Lack of self-esteem on our own knowledge and traditions was still more important.

Bharat witnessed a free flow of glorious tradition in the field of Mathematics since the Vedic period. The whole world recognises the contribution of many esteemed Bharatiya mathematicians. With this fact in mind, a small track of 36 pages only, titled भारत के प्रमुख गणिताचार्य was first written by us for the students to acquaint them with the life and contributions of few of the scholars since shulva sutra period to Ramanujan. We are blessed, when in 2007 during the Vidya Bharati All- India workshop on Vedic Mathematics in Puri; this book was released by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda ji. This small book received a warm response from students and the teachers of Vidya Bharati family.

The second edition with added information and widened scope and depth of knowledge and covering the life of more mathematicians was published in 2017 on the occasion of All-India Vedic Mathematics workshop in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh.

Vidya Bharati is a nation-wide organisation. So, we translated and edited the same book in English with a lot of added information along with the extensive references and are presenting it for the readers and students with the title 'Eminent Mathematicians of Bharat'. Hon. Avanish Ji Bhatnagar, Mantri, Vidya Bharati, and many other scholars dignitaries have conveyed their suggestions to enrich the utility of this book.
