During the tryst with her professional career the author Dr. (Smt.) L. R. Kanchan, was greatly concerned by the fall in standard of values and discipline amongst the younger generation. This impelled her to probe into the problem at the grass root level. Her philosophical and educational background helped her to feel the pulse and gravity of the problem. The writer has full faith in the integrity of the youth and feels that proper guidance can redeem them out of this dark tunnel towards enlightened life.
Dr. Kanchan dedicates this book to the world's youth. Youth is a force to be reckoned with. This explosive force can be used for the constructive purpose of the world if they are harnessed to the right goals of life. Let us pray for a better tomorrow by spreading love and understanding with multiplier effect throughout the world.
"When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, and with old woes new wail my dear time's waste."
- Shakespeare (sonnet)
When I selected the topic for my Doctorate degree which was a professional requirement for a teaching career, little did I realize that it would haunt me for the rest of my life. The research topic entitled "Critical Study of the Philosophical, Psychological, Sociological and Cultural Relation between Education and Religion" was approved by my honourable guide late Dr. N. N. Shukla.
The years I spent in libraries of different institutions, colleges and Mumbai University for source material and reference work related to my investigation made me realize that all my labour would be lost if I allowed my thesis to collect dust. This is the normal ritual of all research work. Hardly anyone reads or refers to it except for the select few who are engaged in the academic field. The very purpose of research to improve the quality of life is defeated. I vowed at that time that I would change the destiny of my thesis by putting it in the hands of my readers in a book form. I am extremely grateful to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan for helping me to realize my dream come true.
I would like to make it clear at the outset that the title of my thesis has been changed as per the suggestion of the Editorial Board of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The new title reads as Education and Religion - A Critical Study. Let me add that I have whole heartedly approved of this and it has been duly incorporated in the entire text of the book with absolutely no change in the content. Rightly it has been said that brevity is the soul of life.
