The following pages on early Andhra Art and Iconography comprise the text of the Mallampalli Somasekhara Sarma Memorial Lectures I delivered at Hyderabad on 7th & 8th January 1977. It was my good fortune to have been very close to Shri Sarma from the very beginning of my life in the field of Indology, and I considered it a rare blessing of his to have been invited to deliver these lectures in his memory. The Government of Andhra Pradesh could not have paid a more befitting tribute to his memory than by instituting Memorial Lectures to constantly remind scholars of the debt they all owe to his vast, erudite and revealing contributions in history, language, art and culture of Andhra. The theme chosen by me was a very dear one to him and I feel it is meaningful in his memory. I am beholden to Dr. N. Ramesan, the erudite Director of the Department of Archaeology of Andhra Pradesh, not only for inviting me for delivering the lectures, but also for very kindly arranging to publish it as a book in the series of publications of the Department that are so well known. I have no words to express my grateful feelings to him. To the Archaeological Survey, the Madras Museum, the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam, the British Museum, Prince of Wales Museum, Bombay and the National Museum, I am grateful for kind supply of photos illustrating this book.
