Dress and Ornaments in Kusana and Gupta periods is a study based on the sculptures of Mathura and Lucknow museums. A previous version of this work was given a gold medal for being the best Ph.D. thesis (1981-82) of Lucknow University. In order to present a comprehensive perspective a variety of iiteraray sources have been examined and a backgrounder on pre-Ku5ana period has been added. In the end about four hundred illustrations have been included.
This thesis was written under the able guidance of Dr. Shailendra Nath Kapoor for which I owe special gratitudes to him. In the preparation of my thesis I was greatly encouraged and helped by Prof. K.D. Vajpai, Prof. Ram Kumar Dikshit, Dr. N. P. Joshi, Shri Ramesh Chandra Sharma, Dr. B.N. Shrivastav, Dr. K.K. Thapalyal, Dr. Ramashray Awasthi and Dr. Omprakash for which I am thankful to them all.
My amma Shrimati Rajeshwari Shandilya and Chacha ji Shri Shri Vilas Tiwari are so near and dear to me that I have no words to express my emu dons at the time of publication of my work. I can only say that without their blessings this was just impossible.
In the end I take pleasure in acknowledging the help of my younger sister Mukul Priydarshini for making this venture a success.
