Netaji Subhas Open University since its inception has been striving hard to get its students together and harness their learning skills to develop their personal lives. In this endeavor, the role of the teachers cannot be ignored. The present volume is an illustration of one such effort.
The School of Humanities, under the able guidance of its Director, Prof Manan Kumar Mandal organized a day-long webinar on the 5th of July, 2020 on the topic 'Design of ELT'. Quite a few papers were presented during this webinar and efforts have been made to put some of these together to provide good academic reading materials to the students on PGELT course. The School is grateful to the Hon. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Subha Sankar Sarkar who kindly agreed to the proposal.
The next task was to edit the papers and set deadlines. As times were difficult (the pandemic days) the deadline had to be extended a few times. But it was worth the trouble.
Before discussing the contents of the book, a word about the dedication will be well in place. This book is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend who departed from us rather early - Prof Julu Sen. She worked in the Department of English as an Honorary Professor and laid the foundation to the PG ELT course. But before the course could take a proper shape, fate snatched her away from us. May her soul rest in peace! As a tribute to her, we are publishing one of her unpublished papers as the very first article. This is autobiographical, yet deeply rooted in the principles of language teaching. With brilliant illustrations, she makes the readers understand how sensitivity to language use is essential.
