The National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad is an important Institute functioning under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) dedicated to the field of medico-historical & literary research related to Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH). Unani medical manuscripts are historical documents and written records that contain knowledge about various aspects of Unani medicine, including its principles, theories, diagnostic methods, treatments, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, medical ethics, historical context, case studies, recipes, and formulations of herbal medicines.
These manuscripts are written in various languages, including Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, and they often represent the collective wisdom of many generations of Unani practitioners and scholars.
These manuscripts are not only important from a historical and cultural perspective but also provide valuable insights into the Unani healing practices that continue to be used in certain parts of the world today. Scholars, researchers, and practitioners of Unani medicine often study these manuscripts to gain a deeper understanding of this ancient healing tradition. Telangana State Government Oriental Manuscripts Library and Research Institute (TSGOMLRI), Hyderabad preserves a huge reservoir of over 600 Unani manuscripts.
Preparing the descriptive catalogue of these manuscripts is not an easy task. I appreciate especially the efforts put in by Dr. Ashfaque Ahmad (Principal Investigator), and the entire team of NIIMH, Hyderabad completing this task. I express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Palepu Subba Rao, Director In-Charge, TSGOMLRI, Hyderabad, for signing MoU and giving access to the manuscripts. I also congratulate Dr. Goli Penchala Prasad, Asst. Director In-Charge, NIIMH, Hyderabad for bringing out the descriptive catalogue of these important books.
I hope this catalogue will help students & scholars of Unani Medicine as well as other researchers and lead to further innovation and intra-AYUSH referrals, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and technology, as well as encourage scholars to think outside the box, explore new ideas, and express themselves through various forms of literature, and science.
