The Asiatic Society is the repository of a huge collection of manuscripts of which Sanskrit manuscripts predominate Texts of almost all the branches of Sanskrit literature are preserved in the manuscripts which have been collected from different sources. Compilation and proper cataloguing of the manuscripts are urgently required for the convenience of scholars related to different fields of Indian studies. Extensive scholastic labour for the preparation of descriptive catalogues of Sanskrit mss. was given in the Asiatic Society by a band reputed Indologists- Mm Haraprasad Sastri being the prominent amongst them. But since their leaving this world, no serious effort was spent for bringing out such volumes of Descriptive Catalogues for a long period. Now the Asiatic Society has employed several cataloguers for carrying out this difficult but very essential job. We have a good number of manuscripts on the Indian Philosophy, which were deposited by the Indian Museum to the Society. This collection includes all the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy. Thanks to Dr Asesh Ranjan Misra, Senior Cataloguer in our Museum, for, he has compiled and prepared a descriptive catalogue of the mss. On Indian Philosophy, of Indian Museum Collection. Now the academic world will be able to find out whether there is any unpublished text of Indian Philosophy in this collection or whether there is any ms of a well-known text with a different version. I am also thankful to Pt. Jagadish Ch. Tarkatirtha and Pt. Madhusudan Vedantasastri who have helped Dr Misra in various ways in preparing this catalogue. Thanks are due also to Prof. Debabrata Sen Sharma for his effective guidance to Dr Misra and also for sincerely editing the press copy of the Catalogue.
The treasure of manuscripts in the museum of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta, is by no means negligible, both qualitatively and quantitatively in comparison with any other museums of this nature in our country. After a long period the Descriptive Catalogue of philosophy in the name of Indian Museum Collection has been prepared by me. It has also been revised and supervised by Pt. Jagadish Chandra Tarkatirtha and Pt. Madhusudan Vedantashastri.
To conclude I am thankful to late Dr. Chandan Roy Choudhury the former General Secretary, Asiatic Society for kindly allowing me the work of Cataloguing this important work I am particularly thankful to the then Philological Secretary and now the General Secretary Dr. Manabendu Banerjee, who inspired me to do this work. I thank all of my friends of Museum Section specially Sri Bijan Kumar Mukherjee stack Assistant, Sri Ganesh Prasad, Sri Manik Mukherjee and Sri Tapas Karmakar for supplying me with the manuscripts. I also thank my friend Dr. Sarbani Bose, who helped me a lot in the work of proof-reading. I also thank the Publication Section of the Asiatic Society.
